Search for the missing link - 15 September 2008

Hi to Cobbett road and Diane Berry,
I Melvyn Lomas will try to fill you in to where I fit into the picture. OK, my name is Melvyn Cobbett Lomas - my mothers name is Valery Gurtrude Middlebrook - her mothers maiden was Dorothy Clarice Wright born 1894 in Cambridge, New Zealand. Her father was William Cobbett Wright (where my second name Cobbett was handed down).

William Cobbett Wright was born in Wisconsin USA 1858 married Edith Gertrude Hill born in Cheadle Cheshire England. They were married in New Zealand 24 oct 1883, he was 25 and she was 26. I have in my possession a copy this marrige certificate.

William Cobbett Wright's father was Williiam Charles Wright and his mother was Maria Cobbett (b. 1819 Ash Surrey England, d. 1896 Auckland New Zealand). I have been told that she is some how related to THE William Cobbett (b. 1763). I hope to shortly recieve a copy of Maria and William Wright's marriage certificate to identify who her father was. I have found in my searches that Maria Cobbett's proper name could have been Anne Phoebe Maria Cobbett. This is where at the moment that I cannot fill in the missing link.

It would be overwhelming if you could shed any light on this.

Thanky you so much for your time.
Kind regards
Melvyn C Lomas

William Cobbett's Family History The William Cobbett Society may well be able to help Cobbett family genealogical enquirers within the UK. The WCS sell an "Account of the Family" by Anne Cobbett for £4.50 - refer to their website for order details. I heard an interesting talk given by Barbara Biddell of that society on the man's life, and she is the author of a 'Hampshire Paper' numbered 15 (published in 1999 by Hampshire County Council) on his time in Hampshire. I know from my copy that William Cobbett (born 1763 in Farnham) was the third of 4 brothers, and that he and his wife, Anne nee Reid (called Nancy), had produced Anne b 1795, William b 1799, John Morgan Cobbett b 1801 and James Paul Cobbett b 1803 when they moved from London to Hampshire by 1805. From 1817 to 1819 Wm Cobbett was again in America. As an aged MP, he leased a farm in 1832 at Ash, Surrey where he died in 1835, so this clear place connection with Melvyn's family birth of 1819 does probably indicate a relationship with William Cobbett hims
